Imposing

Travel almost inevitably offers possibilities for connecting with people whose experiences and priorities differ from our own. A camera can facilitate those interactions or it can preclude them. Either way, it almost always complicates things. While helping with a research project in Cameroon, I used the pretext of making portraits to explore a series of interrelated questions and problems: Who should I ask if they would be willing to be photographed? How will they react? How do I see people and how do they want to be seen? Who gets the last word? These images reflect some of the negotiations around those issues.
